Outliers

Being average isn’t a bad thing. Most people are average; that’s why it’s called average. The question is, do you want to be average or do you want to be an outlier?

You can look at any industry, whether it’s banking, car manufacturing, electronics or whatever and identify those who are average companies and those who are the outliers, the ones doing things a little differently away from the norm. These are the ones making all the noise, generating excitement and innovating the future.

Look around your organisation. People are exactly the same.

You’ll know the people who are there every day doing what’s expected, getting through the work, making sure stuff gets done. Organisations need these people.

But organisations also need the outliers. People who want to change things for the better, make a difference, come up with new ideas, challenge the status quo.

The interesting thing about average, is that it moves. The more outliers you have at the top end, the more the average shifts upwards. When your organisation is full of people who are moving that average up, that’s when the company starts to become an outlier.

That’s when you can start changing the world.
